While she rarely seeks the spotlight, her warmth, wit and gentle humour can be felt in every corner of the retreat. After all, this is her home—and now, it’s yours too

Grayson is the calm, composed heart of The Scunnered Lady Retreat. Impeccably dressed and unfailingly polite, he ensures every guest feels welcome from the moment they arrive. Whether serving afternoon tea, organising the library or quietly restoring order after one of Rab’s latest announcements, Grayson approaches every task with effortless professionalism.
Beneath his refined exterior lies a dry sense of humour, unwavering loyalty and an uncanny ability to solve problems before anyone else realises they exist. If something has gone missing or a mystery needs solving you can be fairly certain Grayson already has the answer.

Grayson is rarely far away. Dougal McShoogal believes every guest deserves a warm welcome, a friendly face and a reason to smile. With boundless enthusiasm, a wagging tail and an endless supply of affection, he has an extraordinary talent for making everyone feel instantly at home. Whether greeting visitors at the front door, accompanying guests on a stroll through the gardens or settling down for a well-earned nap, Dougal reminds us that happiness is often found in life’s simplest moments.
Gentle, loyal and endlessly optimistic, Dougal has a knack for brightening even the gloomiest of days. He asks for very little in return—perhaps a kind word, a scratch behind the ears and, if you’re feeling generous, the occasional biscuit. Around the retreat, it’s widely accepted that a visit isn’t truly complete until you’ve been welcomed by Dougal.

while everyone else believes they help run The Scunnered Lady Retreat, The Cat knows better. Calm, observant and effortlessly elegant, they spend their days supervising guests from the comfiest chair, inspecting every room and accepting affection entirely on their own terms. Nothing escapes those watchful eyes, and no sunny windowsill goes unappreciated.
Although they may a[[ear wonderfully independent, The Cat has a softer side reserved for those who earn their trust. whether curling up beside a crackling fire , quietly following Grayson through the house or keeping Dougal out of mischief, they bring a quiet sense of comfort to every corner of the Retreat

Where you’ll find the cat
The Cat can usually be found wherever the sunshine is brightest and the chairs are most comfortable. If you’re lucky, you might even be rewarded with a slow blink—the highest compliment a cat can give.

Robert “Rab the Gab” McSquawk is the retreat’s resident storyteller, commentator and enthusiastic collector of rumours. If someone has arrived, something unusual has happened or there’s the faintest hint of a mystery unfolding, Rab has probably heard about it first—and is already halfway through telling everyone else. His colourful personality, quick wit and endless chatter ensure there’s never a dull moment when he’s nearby.
Beneath the dramatic stories and playful exaggeration lies a loyal friend who genuinely enjoys bringing people together. Whether welcoming new guests, entertaining everyone with tales of the day’s events or providing running commentary from his favourite perch, Rab reminds us that life is always more enjoyable when there’s laughter to share.

Rab is rarely difficult to find—you simply have to listen. Most days he’s perched proudly in the Parlour of Mild Irritations, greeting guests, sharing the latest news and offering colourful commentary on everything happening around the retreat. If there’s a conversation taking place, chances are Rab is already part of it… whether he was invited or not.
Every Mystery involves a good investigation
The Highland’s Most Enthusiastic Detective
Police Officer Hector Porridge approaches every mystery with unwavering optimism, a well-worn notebook and an impressive collection of theories. Although his investigations don’t always go exactly to plan, his determination, honesty and good humour have made him a much-loved member of The Scunnered Lady Retreat. No puzzle is too small, no clue too insignificant and no suspicious teacup goes unnoticed—at least eventually.
While Grayson often has the answer before Hector has finished gathering the evidence, Hector never lets that dampen his enthusiasm. He firmly believes every mystery deserves a fair investigation and every guest deserves to feel safe, making him a reassuring and familiar face around the retreat.

There is something rather unusual about Morvern Moon.
While most people see an ordinary locked door, Morvern sees a mystery waiting to be solved. A strange noise in the corridor? Worth investigating. A missing object? Highly suspicious. A secret passage? Well, that simply demands exploring!
Clever, curious and blessed with a wonderfully mischievous imagination, Morvern has a remarkable talent for finding trouble — usually while insisting she’s doing nothing of the sort.
Armed with her trusty notebook, a sharp eye for clues and an endless supply of questions, she investigates the peculiar happenings around The Scunnered Lady Retreat.
And if you think you’ve solved the mystery before she has, she’d be delighted to hear your theory. Although she’d probably already be three clues ahead.
