Welcome to The Study

Where Curiosity Meets Artificial Intelligence

What if you had a helping hand available whenever you needed one?

Someone who could help you plan a holiday, explain a confusing letter, suggest what to cook with three potatoes and a tin of tomatoes, or help you redesign your living room without spending a penny on an interior designer.

Someone who wouldn’t roll their eyes when you asked the same question for the fifth time.

Welcome to the rather extraordinary world of artificial intelligence.

Here at The Scunnered Lady, we believe curiosity should never have an age limit, technology shouldn’t require a university degree to understand, and nobody should feel left behind simply because the world is changing.

So, pull up a chair. The Study is open.

First Things First — What Actually Is AI?

Artificial intelligence, or AI for short, is technology designed to perform tasks that would ordinarily require aspects of human intelligence.

It can recognise patterns, understand and generate language, analyse information, create images, and help solve problems.

One particularly exciting development is generative AI, which can produce new text, pictures, music and other content in response to instructions.

You may already have heard of ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini or Microsoft’s Copilot.

These are examples of AI assistants that you can communicate with using ordinary language.

You don’t need to learn computer programming.

You don’t need expensive equipment.

And you certainly don’t need to understand what an algorithm is before you’re allowed through the door.

You simply type a question, much as you would ask another person.

For example:

“I’m having eight people round for dinner on Saturday. I have £60 to spend, one guest is vegetarian, and my cooking skills are questionable. Help!”

Within moments, AI can suggest a menu, calculate a shopping list, recommend recipes and organise a cooking timetable.

Whether the dinner turns out successfully is, of course, another matter entirely.

The Wonderful Thing About AI Is That You Don’t Need to Be an Expert

Think back to the first time you used the internet.

Perhaps you wondered what on earth you were supposed to do with it.

Now we use it for banking, shopping, entertainment, keeping in touch and finding out whether an actor really is the same person who appeared in Coronation Street in 1997.

AI represents another significant change in how we interact with technology.

But there’s an important difference.

Instead of spending hours searching through websites, you can have a conversation.

You can ask follow-up questions, request simpler explanations, change your mind or ask for another suggestion.

Imagine asking:

“Explain how a mortgage works.”

After receiving an explanation, you might say:

“That’s still too complicated. Explain it as though I’ve never bought a house before.”

And then:

“Show me an example using a £180,000 property.”

The AI can adapt its explanation to suit your needs.

It’s rather like having an endlessly patient reference library that can talk back.

Although, unlike a traditional library, it occasionally gets things wrong — something we’ll return to shortly.

It’s Not Just for Computers and Technology Enthusiasts

One of the biggest misconceptions about artificial intelligence is that it’s primarily useful to scientists, programmers and enormous companies with equally enormous budgets.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Consider a few ordinary situations.

The parent juggling a thousand responsibilities

AI can help create family routines, suggest inexpensive activities for rainy weekends, plan packed lunches and organise the weekly shopping.

The person who struggles with written communication

It can help draft emails, simplify complicated instructions, organise thoughts and suggest ways to approach difficult conversations.

The enthusiastic home decorator

Upload a photograph of a room and ask for ideas to transform it into something beautiful. Explore colours, furniture arrangements and decorating styles before committing to expensive purchases.

The older person who feels technology has left them behind

AI can explain how to use a smartphone, walk through an unfamiliar online form or help someone learn a new digital skill at their own pace.

The aspiring entrepreneur

From brainstorming business names to drafting product descriptions, researching ideas and planning marketing campaigns, AI can be a useful creative and organisational assistant.

The lifelong learner

Want to understand Scottish history? Learn conversational Italian? Discover why the moon changes shape throughout the month?

Ask away.

And if the answer leaves you with another twenty questions, that’s perfectly fine.

Curiosity is rather encouraged in The Study.

What About People Who Need a Little Extra Support?

This is one of the areas where artificial intelligence has particularly interesting possibilities.

For some autistic people, AI can help create predictable routines, break overwhelming tasks into manageable steps or practise conversations before unfamiliar social situations.

Someone with dyslexia might use it to simplify written information or organise ideas.

A person who finds planning difficult may benefit from turning a long, intimidating to-do list into a clear sequence of smaller tasks.

AI can also support people learning English, those returning to education and individuals who simply prefer information presented differently.

Of course, no two people have identical needs. What helps one person may be unhelpful to another.

AI is not a substitute for professional care, human relationships or appropriate disability support.

But used thoughtfully, it can offer another option for making everyday life more manageable.

We’ll explore this subject in much greater detail in our next article.

Can AI Really Be Creative?

Absolutely — although the creativity comes from a fascinating partnership between human ideas and machine-generated possibilities.

Suppose you’ve always dreamed of a beautiful Georgian-style drawing room.

You love dramatic fireplaces, elegant furniture and luxurious fabrics, but you have absolutely no idea where to begin.

You could describe your vision to an AI assistant, upload photographs and ask it to develop several different design concepts.

Perhaps you want something traditional.

Perhaps something contemporary.

Perhaps you’ve decided that the entire room should be purple.

We’re not here to judge.

AI can help you explore those possibilities visually, refine your preferences and build a practical decorating plan.

The same approach can be used for gardens, craft projects, party decorations, clothing ideas and countless other creative pursuits.

The important thing to remember is that you remain the decision-maker.

AI can suggest. You choose.

And sometimes you’ll discover that the best idea is one you hadn’t considered at all.

Now, Before We Get Too Carried Away…

Artificial intelligence is remarkable.

It is not infallible.

AI assistants can occasionally produce information that sounds perfectly convincing but is completely incorrect.

This is sometimes called an AI hallucination.

A system might invent a historical detail, misunderstand a question or confidently recommend a product that doesn’t exist.

It can also reflect biases in the information used to develop it.

So there are a few sensible principles worth remembering.

  • Check important facts using reliable sources.
  • Never share passwords, banking security details or other highly sensitive personal information.
  • Seek qualified professional advice for significant medical, legal and financial decisions.
  • Remember that AI-generated images and suggestions aren’t always realistic or technically accurate.
  • Use your own judgement rather than accepting every answer unquestioningly.

Think of AI as a very capable assistant rather than an all-knowing authority.

Even Grayson, our esteemed house manager, would admit that an assistant requires occasional supervision.

Although he’d probably insist that this observation did not apply to him.

The Best Way to Understand AI? Try It.

You can read a hundred articles about artificial intelligence, but the moment it becomes interesting is when you discover something useful for yourself.

Start with something simple.

Perhaps a question you’ve always wanted answered.

A household problem you haven’t managed to solve.

A recipe you’d like to try.

Or an idea you’ve been carrying around for years without knowing how to bring it to life.

You don’t have to get your instructions perfect.

You can change them, add more detail or simply say, “That’s not quite what I meant.”

The more clearly you explain what you’re hoping to achieve, the more useful the response is likely to be.

And that brings us to our very first practical exercise.

Have a Go Yourself!

If you’re new to artificial intelligence, try copying one of these prompts into an AI assistant such as ChatGPT.

1. Make my life a little easier

“I’m new to artificial intelligence. Ask me five simple questions about my everyday life, then suggest practical ways AI could help me.”

2. Teach me something fascinating

“Tell me five surprising facts about Scotland that most people probably don’t know. Explain them in an entertaining way and include reliable sources so I can check them.”

3. Help me discover something new

“I’d like to learn a new hobby, but I’m not sure what would suit me. Ask me about my interests, budget and available time, then recommend five hobbies I might enjoy.”

You might be surprised where the conversation takes you.

A Final Word from The Study

Artificial intelligence isn’t about replacing human imagination, intelligence or individuality.

At its best, it’s about giving people additional tools to explore ideas, develop skills, overcome everyday obstacles and achieve things they might previously have considered beyond their reach.

You don’t have to embrace every new invention.

You don’t have to become a technology enthusiast.

And you certainly don’t have to understand the machinery behind it all.

You only need a little curiosity and the willingness to try something different.

Here at The Scunnered Lady, The Study will explore artificial intelligence through real-life situations, practical advice and ideas that anyone can understand.

No unnecessary jargon.

No lectures.

And absolutely no examinations.

Just useful discoveries, a healthy dose of common sense and the occasional moment of astonishment.

Because the future shouldn’t belong exclusively to the people who understand technology. It should belong to everyone who wants to make something of it.

Welcome to The Study. Your curiosity is your admission ticket.
