Welcome to The Scunnered Lady
Welcome
An extraordinary Highland retreat for the fed up, the curious and everyone in between.
Somewhere between Arisaig and Acharacle, tucked away among the mountains and lochs of the Scottish Highlands, stands a rather unusual country house.
From the outside, it appears to be a beautiful Highland retreat, complete with magnificent grounds, vintage motorcars and an atmosphere of respectable tranquillity.
Inside, however, things are considerably less predictable.
A place where everyday life meets imagination, good advice mingles with mild irritation, and absolutely everyone is welcome.
The idea behind the retreat
The Scunnered Lady was born from a simple observation: life can be wonderful, ridiculous, exhausting and occasionally downright scunnering.
We all need somewhere to escape the noise, discover something interesting, have a laugh or simply enjoy five minutes without somebody asking us to do something.
And so our imaginary Highland retreat came into existence.
Not quite a magazine. Not quite a country house. Not quite like anywhere else on the internet.
Instead, it’s a collection of rooms, characters, stories, useful discoveries and unexpected adventures, all waiting behind the doors of one extraordinary house.
A house with a room for everything
The retreat is rather larger on the inside than its exterior might suggest.
Fancy a little light-hearted grumbling? The Parlour of Mild Irritations welcomes those who appreciate the absurdities of everyday life.
Looking for something fascinating to read? Wander into The Library, where stories, knowledge and curious discoveries await.
Perhaps you’d prefer the Tearoom, where recipes and comforting treats are served without anyone judging your biscuit consumption.
There’s a Powder Room for beauty and self-care, a Glasshouse of Calm for moments of peace, and a Drawing Room filled with inspiration for beautiful living.
Creative souls can explore the Craft Room, while the Bothy offers its own corner of practical interests and discoveries.
Elsewhere you’ll find the Study, Games Loft, Animal Meadow, Family Room, Boudoir and Gift Shop, each with its own personality.
And then there’s the Raven Room.
But more about that shortly.
Meet the residents
Of course, no respectable Highland establishment could function without its staff and assorted inhabitants.
At least, that’s the theory.
Grayson, our distinguished butler and house manager, does his utmost to maintain order, dignity and standards. His success varies considerably depending on which resident has been left unsupervised.
Dougal McShoogal, our resident West Highland terrier, considers himself an indispensable member of the household. His responsibilities are largely self-appointed.
The Cat, a magnificent ginger creature, regards the entire estate as personal property and everyone else as temporary staff.
Then there’s Rab the Gab McSquawk, our outspoken parrot, whose enthusiasm for conversation is exceeded only by his ability to say precisely the wrong thing at precisely the wrong moment.
Beyond the house, Hector Porridge, our local policeman, occasionally finds himself drawn into the retreat’s more peculiar affairs.
And presiding over this curious establishment is The Scunnered Lady herself, a woman with impeccable taste, considerable opinions and a remarkable tolerance for nonsense — although that tolerance is regularly tested.
Together, they make life at the retreat anything but ordinary.
A little mystery behind the Raven Room
Younger visitors haven’t been forgotten.
Within the Raven Room lives the world of Morvern Moon’s Mysteries, where curious young minds can enjoy animated adventures, puzzling clues, strange happenings and mysteries waiting to be solved.
Designed especially for children aged 6–12, Morvern’s adventures encourage imagination, observation and a little detective work.
Naturally, the grown-ups are welcome to join in too.
More than stories
The Scunnered Lady isn’t simply somewhere to read.
It’s somewhere to discover.
Throughout the retreat, you’ll find carefully selected products, creative ideas, practical advice, recipes, entertainment and recommendations.
Our Gift Shop is intended to offer interesting, distinctive and quality finds rather than endless shelves of things nobody particularly needs.
Some discoveries will be useful. Others beautiful. A few might be wonderfully unnecessary.
That’s part of the pleasure.
Your invitation
Whether you’ve arrived looking for inspiration, entertainment, a thoughtful recommendation or simply somewhere to escape the daily nonsense, there’s a place for you here.
You don’t need an invitation, a membership or an impressive title.
Just a little curiosity and, preferably, a sense of humour.
So come inside.
Grayson will see to your arrival. Dougal will probably investigate your shoes. The Cat may acknowledge your existence if you’re fortunate.
And somewhere in the distance, Rab will almost certainly be shouting something inappropriate.
Welcome to The Scunnered Lady.
Sharing tips, tales and mild irritation since 2026.
With warm regards and a healthy disregard for unnecessary nonsense,
The Scunnered Lady
